Dear Respected Parents & Guardians

We hope this message reaches you in the best state of health and emaan.

As we approach the end of our first term, we would like to say JazaakAllah Khairan to all of our parents and students who are doing an amazing job. We have witnessed great things from our students and they have developed in numerous ways over a short period of time. We know this can only be possible through the hard work and dedication of not only our students and staff, but also our parents and carers, too. We truly appreciate the effort and thank you for your perseverance.

We encourage all parents to instruct their children to continue their revision during the winter break, whilst also taking the time out to enjoy a well-deserved holiday before commencing their examinations in January.

Please do read on for important notices regarding our ‘Lateness Policy’, key dates for next term, important reminders as well as pupil achievement.

We wish the entire LII community a safe and restful holiday and look forward to seeing you all at the start of the new term.

Recognising Achievement

We would like to highlight a number of students who have exceeded expectations in their overall conduct, effort, academic progress and/or attendance and punctuality. Throughout the term, we have designated a number of students as ‘Stars of the Month’ and, to further encourage and reward them, we have introduced gifts such as Zam Zam water, halal sweets and tickets to the Horniman Museum aquarium.

P A L E S T I N E

We wish to take this opportunity to address the ongoing oppression of the people of Palestine. Alhamdulillah, this term we were able to deliver presentations regarding the history of Palestine and its importance to Muslims, the virtues of Masjid al-Aqsa, and our responsibility to assist others during this difficult and testing time. Moreover, our fundraiser (in conjunction with Lewisham Mosque) raised over £8000! JazaakAllah khairan to everyone who participated and supported this incredibly important cause.

At LII, we shall continue to raise awareness on issues pertaining to oppression across the world through our ‘Ummah Days’ curriculum. This section of the curriculum (delivered on a termly basis) allows students to learn about often overlooked plights, such as the Uyghur Muslims, people of Kashmir, Palestine and much more. We should remember that the Palestine issue is not an issue of nationalism, but an issue which should concern every Muslim and every individual that has disdain for injustice.

The key message here is that the possibilities are endless when we work together as a community. Our children must be educated regarding working together as we know this can produce real change and meaningful results. We are continuing our annual charity project from last year, having currently raised approximately £2000 to build a masjid in Africa. We encourage students to continue raising money for this as a means of sadaqah jaariyah, in sha Allah.

Cleanliness in Islam

Another point of reflection, particularly pertinent to our younger learners but relevant to all students, is the issue of using the toilet appropriately. On a number of occasions, our caretakers have found the toilets in an unpleasant state. We politely ask all parents and carers to ensure their children are able to utilise the bathroom facilities adequately and independently. Parents may wish to refer to the chapters on cleanliness within the Safar textbooks as an engaging resource, if necessary.

Late Policy

We would like to make all parents aware of our ‘Late Policy’ which will come into effect from the 1st January 2024. This policy pertains to pupils who arrive late to the madrassah, as well as parents/guardians who collect their children late.

On a number of occasions, we have had children collected after 8:30pm, well after madrassah has ended. We also have students arriving at the madrassah after 6:30pm. Therefore, any child that arrives later than 6pm without prior notice from parents/guardians, will not be permitted entry. If your child’s lateness is unavoidable, please inform us at least one hour before the start of their first lesson.

Similarly, parents that collect their children later than 7:50pm will incur a £5 fee. This fee will increase by £5 every 10 minutes. Please remember that our staff also have rights and responsibilities which they are due, and we would like to ensure they can leave the premises safely and in a timely manner. JazaakAllah khair to all those who have been punctual when dropping off and collecting their children and we pray Allah makes this easy for everyone.

Hadith of the Term

“The believer who recites the Qur’an is like a citron whose fragrance is sweet and whose taste is delicious. A believer who does not recite the Qur’an is like a date-fruit which has no fragrance but has a sweet taste. The hypocrite who recites the Qur’an is like basil whose fragrance is so sweet, but its taste is bitter. The hypocrite who does not recite the Qur’an is like a colocynth which has no fragrance and its taste is bitter”.
